Château de Termes, Medieval castle ruins in Hautes-Corbières, France.

The ruins of Château de Termes stand on a rocky promontory at 460 meters altitude, providing panoramic views over the Termenet gorges and Sou valley in the rugged Corbières landscape.

In 1210, Raimond de Termes heroically resisted for three months against the siege led by Simon de Montfort during the Albigensian Crusade, before water shortage forced the fortress to surrender.

The castle symbolizes Cathar resistance against the Crusaders and is part of five royal Languedoc fortresses seeking UNESCO World Heritage inscription under the designation Sons of Carcassonne.

The site is accessible from March to November with a village welcome center offering an exhibition and film, followed by a 15-minute walk to the ruins with mobile digital support.

Archaeological excavations reveal that the castle housed the original village of Termes with two suburbs terraced on the slope, before the community was relocated to the valley in 1260.
