Château de Tournoël, Medieval fortress in Volvic, France
The stone castle stands at 594 meters altitude on a rocky mountain spur, commanding views over the Limagne plains and Riom city below.
The initial castle construction dates from the 10th century, with ownership changing between the counts of Auvergne and the French crown through medieval times.
The castle features architectural elements in Volvic stone, including carved decorations and a preserved tympanum depicting the Annunciation in the chapel vestibule.
The castle opens daily in July and August with guided tours at 10:00, 11:00, 14:00, 15:00, 16:00, and 17:00, with entrance fees of 10€ for adults.
The circular defense tower reaches 30 meters high with walls over 4 meters thick, demonstrating advanced military architecture of medieval France.
