Château de Sassenage, Classified historic monument in Sassenage, France

Château de Sassenage is a limestone and molasse stone castle in Sassenage featuring classical architecture, a grand balustraded staircase, and a vaulted kitchen with a monumental fireplace. The building structure displays typical details from 17th-century construction and retains original interior finishes throughout its rooms.

Construction took place between 1662 and 1669 under the direction of architect Laurent Sommaire, replacing an earlier 13th-century fortress at the entrance of the wooded estate. This rebuilding represented a shift from medieval defensive structures to a classical residential dwelling.

The château displays original furnishings and paintings throughout its rooms, including artwork depicting the goddess Psyche that draws inspiration from designs seen at Villa Farnesina in Rome. Visitors walking through the interior can observe how these artistic elements shaped the way the space was arranged and decorated.

The château opens for guided tours during summer months from mid-July through mid-August, with departures on most days except weekends. Additional monthly visits are available on the first Sunday of each month, offering multiple options for experiencing the property.

The surrounding grounds preserve ancient cedar trees and black walnut trees that give the wooded estate botanical character. These tall trees form a distinctive backdrop for the property and add to its overall setting.
