Marigny German War Cemetery

Marigny German War Cemetery is a burial ground in Normandy that holds the remains of more than 11,000 fallen soldiers from World War 2. The site is divided into five sections, with each grave marked by a ceramic plaque showing the soldier's name, rank, and date of death.

The site was established by the United States Army in 1944 following the invasion of Normandy as a burial ground for fallen soldiers. American remains were later moved to a separate cemetery at Saint-Laurent-sur-Mer, leaving this place dedicated solely to German dead.

Young visitors from Germany come here to learn about the war and take part in remembrance ceremonies throughout the year. These visits create a space where people reflect on the costs of conflict and the importance of peace.

The cemetery is open year-round and easy to walk through at a slow pace, allowing visitors to pause and read the plaques. Plan to spend at least an hour or two exploring all five sections without rush.

Many of those buried here belonged to the Panzer-Lehr Division, which suffered heavy losses during the Allied bombardment near Saint-Lô in July 1944. This specific military unit's concentration at the site connects it directly to one of the major battles of the Normandy campaign.
