Fort du Bois d'Oye

The Fort du Bois d'Oye is a fortress with a five-sided shape made of limestone walls surrounding a large open courtyard. The structure sits at 420 meters elevation and was equipped with wells and a cistern system for water supply.

The fort was built between 1883 and 1886 as part of a defensive ring protecting Belfort. It followed the military building principles of the Séré de Rivières system that shaped French fortresses of that era.

The fort reflects how French military planners of the late 1800s thought about defense through its position overlooking key transportation routes. This location allowed soldiers to monitor both railway lines in the region.

The site sits on elevated ground and offers views across the surrounding landscape. Comfortable shoes are recommended for exploring the paths and terrain.

Between 1908 and 1913, the fort received concrete reinforcements and updated weapons, including three machine gun turrets. This upgrade showed how the French military adapted its older defenses to changes in warfare technology.
