Hourtin-Carcans Lake

Hourtin-Carcans Lake extends 18 kilometers along the Atlantic coast and is roughly 5 kilometers wide with a water surface of 5,800 hectares. The water body features gently sloping shores and calm waters that accommodate various recreational pursuits throughout the year.

American forces established a seaplane base at Contaut in 1917 on the northern edge during World War I. The installation was later converted into a French naval training facility that shaped regional development.

The eastern shore is defined by Port Serge Reigniez, while the western side is home to Piqueyrot, creating two distinct communities around the water. Each settlement has developed its own character and local traditions that shape daily life along the banks.

The lake offers sailing, windsurfing, and kayaking in designated areas, with swimming zones and boat rental available along both shores. The stable water level throughout the seasons makes it straightforward to plan water activities without worrying about seasonal variations.

Unlike many other French lakes, this water body maintains a consistent level throughout all seasons without experiencing seasonal fluctuations. This stability makes it a reliable destination for water sports enthusiasts who can count on steady conditions.
