Château de la Brède

The medieval fortress features water-filled moats surrounding its granite walls and stands within extensive gardens near Bordeaux's wine region.

Built in 1306, the castle gained prominence as the birthplace of philosopher Montesquieu in 1689, who later wrote many influential works within its walls.

The castle maintains Montesquieu's personal chambers and library from the 18th century, offering direct connections to his philosophical contributions.

Visitors can explore the castle grounds and interiors from Easter to November 11, with guided tours available Wednesday through Sunday between 14:00 and 18:00.

The Countess of Chabannes, Montesquieu's descendant, transferred ownership to her namesake Foundation in 2004, ensuring its preservation for future generations.
