Abbaye de Haute-Seille, Cistercian abbey in Cirey-sur-Vezouze, France.

The Abbaye de Haute-Seille is a Cistercian monastery near Cirey-sur-Vezouze with the remains of farming buildings arranged around a rectangular courtyard. A Romanesque gateway with multiple arches marks the entrance to this historic religious site.

The monastery was established in 1140 when Countess Agnes donated land to the Cistercian order and received its consecration in 1176. This foundation shaped the region's growth for several centuries afterward.

The monastery was a spiritual and economic hub for the surrounding region, shaping how people farmed and organized their work for centuries. You can still see this influence in how the buildings are arranged and how the courtyard is designed.

The site is located at Haute Seille in Cirey-sur-Vezouze and can be explored on foot along marked pathways. You will need comfortable walking shoes as you move between the different building remains scattered across the grounds.

The name Haute-Seille comes from the Latin Alta Silva, meaning High Forest, and has no connection to the Seille river in the area. This linguistic origin reflects how the landscape was heavily forested when the monastery was founded.
