The church of Leoncel Abbey stands at 900 meters altitude in the Vercors valley, featuring round arches and strong pillars supporting underground corridors.
Founded in 1137 by twelve monks from the Cistercian Order, the abbey reached its peak in the 13th century with 20 choir monks and 30 lay brothers.
The abbey hosts classical and sacred music performances during the Chapelles Royans-Vercors Festival each July in its medieval church.
The abbey church remains open daily from 8:30 AM to 8:00 PM, with morning prayers at 7:30 AM and evening vespers at 5:30 PM.
In 2018, a hermit established residence at Leoncel Abbey, maintaining the spiritual continuity of this 12th-century religious site.
