Ourscamp Abbey

Ourscamp Abbey is a Gothic ruin featuring tall windows and stone columns, approached through a tree-lined path. The preserved choir and eighteenth-century living quarters show how the complex once housed a large monastic community.

Cistercian monks founded the abbey in 1129 and developed it into a major religious center. Significant damage occurred during the Hundred Years War in 1358.

The name recalls an old French word for bear, reflecting a connection to local stories and identity. Visitors can observe how the spaces were arranged to support the monks' daily spiritual and community life.

The site is located in northern France's Oise department and welcomes visitors to walk through the grounds. Wear sturdy shoes when exploring the ruins and the surrounding grounds.

A carved bear sculpture at the site connects to Saint Eloi, whom local tradition credits with taming a wild bear that appeared on the grounds. This unusual story blends religious devotion with curious medieval local lore.
