Château de Cropières

Château de Cropières is a granite fortress positioned on elevated ground with towers at each corner and thick defensive walls enclosing the central structure. The construction combines original military features with residential comforts added during different building periods.

The fortress was founded in the 13th century and served as a residence for the Fontanges family across many generations. It later gained official protection status as a historical monument in 1986.

The castle shaped how local nobility displayed their power and wealth through imposing stone construction in this rural area. Its architecture reflects the balance between military defense needs and the desire for comfortable living quarters.

Access is only available through advance booking and guided tours, as the site remains privately owned. Visitors should arrange their visit in advance and wear sturdy footwear suitable for uneven stone terrain.
