Château de Beaurepaire-en-Bresse

Château de Beaurepaire-en-Bresse is a fortified structure with a rectangular main building accessed by a stone bridge that leads through a pavilion positioned over water-filled moats. The bridge and moat system still clearly demonstrate the defensive design of the medieval period.

The structure originates from the 13th century and underwent major reconstruction in the 15th century under Thibaud de Beaurepaire. During this later period, both the form and interior spaces were adapted to changing needs.

The chapel displays refined plasterwork and carved wooden panels that reflect the taste of the 18th and 19th centuries. These crafted details show how the interior style evolved over the generations.

The castle remains privately owned with restricted access, so visits require advance arrangements with the property owners. It is best to contact them early to clarify what viewing options may be available.

The southwest corner features a large pavilion that preserves the position of the original fortress tower from medieval times. The expansive gardens that once surrounded the castle have been converted into grazing pastures over the centuries.
