Château du Parc-Soubise

Château du Parc-Soubise is a Renaissance castle in Mouchamps with a main building designed in regular proportions. The structure displays decorative columns and a coat of arms positioned near the entrance.

The castle began as a holding of the Lusignan family before passing to the Parthenay family in the 1500s. They established it as their main residence in the Poitou area and renovated it in Renaissance style.

The castle drew scholars and thinkers in the 1500s because of its reputation as a center of learning. Important figures of the era passed through its rooms, attracted by the intellectual life that flourished there.

The castle is open for guided tours only during specific months of the year. Visiting on weekday mornings allows you to explore the grounds and interior at a steady pace.

Revolutionary forces attacked the castle in 1794, setting fires that caused extensive damage to the structure. The marks of this violent episode remain visible in the stonework and interior spaces.
