Cimetière des Gonards, Rural cemetery in Versailles, France
Cimetière des Gonards is a rural cemetery on the southeastern edge of Versailles that covers about 13 hectares of land. It contains more than 12,000 burial sites arranged throughout the grounds.
The cemetery was established in 1879 and became an important burial site for the region. It holds 181 Commonwealth graves from World War I and II, belonging to soldiers who received care at Versailles General Hospital.
The cemetery reflects the religious diversity of Versailles, with dedicated sections for Jewish burials alongside Protestant graves from England and America. These different burial practices show how people of various backgrounds made their home in the city.
You can reach the cemetery via the A13 motorway or from the nearby Gare des Chantiers railway station in Versailles. The site is accessible by car or public transport, and walking paths lead through the grounds.
The upper section has two chapels designed by architect Hector Guimard in 1894, the Devos-Logie and Mirand-Devos Chapels. These structures display his distinctive design approach and often go unnoticed by visitors despite their architectural interest.
