The Palais des Beaux-Arts spans 22,000 square meters and contains over 72,000 artworks, making it the second largest art museum in France after the Louvre.
Napoleon I established the museum in 1809 as part of a national initiative to distribute confiscated artworks from churches and European territories to fifteen French cities.
The museum exhibits collections from major European artistic movements from the 12th to 20th centuries, including works by Raphael, Donatello, Van Dyck, Rembrandt, and Goya.
The museum opens Monday afternoons and Wednesday through Sunday from morning to evening, with wheelchair access and specialized guided tours available throughout the week.
The 1990s renovation created a 700-square-meter basement exhibition space and introduced a modern blade-shaped building extension at the rear of the structure.
