Château de Montaigut, Medieval castle in Gissac, France
Château de Montaigut is a castle perched on a rocky outcrop at 505 meters, overlooking the Dourdou de Camarès river valley in South Aveyron. The structure contains multiple vaulted rooms, a guard room, a prison, and a cistern carved into the bedrock beneath it.
The castle was built in the late tenth century and underwent major modifications by the Blanc family in the fifteenth century. Following these changes, the structure gradually fell into disrepair.
The castle houses an ecomuseum focused on local geology, farming traditions, and the history of the Rougier de Camarès region. Visitors can explore exhibitions that reveal how people have lived and worked in this landscape over time.
The location sits near the A75 motorway connecting Millau to Montpellier, making it easily accessible by car. The site offers guided tours and runs summer training programs for tourism professionals.
The ground beneath the castle holds a cistern carved into the stone, serving as a hidden water supply during sieges. This underground storage reveals how residents planned to survive extended blockades.
