Château d'Artigny, Hotel and château in Montbazon, France.
Château d'Artigny is a white stone castle perched above the Indre Valley within a 25-hectare park that contains two companion buildings, the Pavillon d'Ariane and the Cité des Parfums. The estate functions as a hotel with 56 rooms spread across three sections, along with a dining venue called L'Origan and a spa offering sauna, hammam, and jacuzzi services.
Perfumer François Coty acquired the estate in 1912 and spent twelve years rebuilding the existing structure, moving it 12 meters from the cliff edge. This ambitious relocation and reconstruction made the castle a significant architectural undertaking of its era.
The first-floor rotunda displays decorative ceiling paintings that show a 1920s costume ball with figures from that era, reflecting the lifestyle of the perfumer who created the estate. These artworks give visitors a window into the refined society of that time.
The castle sits in an elevated location above the valley and you need to navigate through the grounds to reach different areas comfortably. Wear comfortable walking shoes since exploring the gardens and grounds involves considerable walking.
The wine cellar holds approximately 45000 bottles of Touraine wines, showcasing how deeply connected the estate is to the region's wine traditions. This extensive collection tells the story of Loire Valley winemaking heritage that visitors can observe throughout the property.
