Castle Site of Montbazon, Medieval keep in Montbazon, France

The Castle Site of Montbazon is a fortified complex centered on a rectangular keep rising from a rocky hilltop above the Loire Valley landscape. The structure encompasses multiple levels and is surrounded by remnants of walls that mark the former extent of the fortress.

The fortress was built in the 990s by Fulk Nerra, a powerful count of the region, and formed part of a large network of strongholds across the Loire area. These fortifications were designed to control this important region and left a lasting mark on medieval history.

The site hosts demonstrations of medieval crafts and combat techniques that show visitors how people lived centuries ago. These regular presentations help bring the past to life in a tangible way.

The site is open during warmer months when guided tours and events run regularly to enhance the visit. Wear sturdy shoes, as the path to the keep crosses uneven ground and can be exposed to wind.

A deep vertical crack runs through the keep's stone walls from a lightning strike in the late 1700s and remains clearly visible today. This mark tells the story of natural forces that shaped this place over time.

The Loire Valley features Gothic cathedrals, Renaissance châteaux and medieval squares. From Saint-Gatien Cathedral to Château de Chenonceau, each location displays architectural details: towers, stone walls, decorated facades and geometric gardens. The city of Tours combines half-timbered houses, bridges over the Loire, religious buildings and public squares with century-old trees. Saint-Gatien Cathedral rises with its two towers and stained glass windows from the 13th century in the heart of Tours. Château de Chenonceau spans the Cher River with its galleries and French gardens. Place Plumereau in the historic center is surrounded by medieval houses with wooden beams. The Loire châteaux such as Amboise, Villandry and Azay-le-Rideau offer photographs of white stone facades, towers and terraced gardens. The banks of the Loire reveal sandy beaches, old stone bridges and vineyards stretching along the river.

really very very good for children and adults. The story of the dungeon is told by a professional and friendly guide, the explanation about hygiene at that time is very funny and very well animated, and the workshop hosts are all great. Children (but also adults if they want) can make their own candles, pouches, bracelets, pots.... like in the past. In several small shops in the middle of the fortress, one discovers the trades of the Middle Ages. In short, we did not expect to leave so enthusiastic.
