Castagniers Abbey, Cistercian abbey in Castagniers, France
Castagniers Abbey, also known as Notre-Dame-de-la-Paix, sits on a hillside in the Alpes-Maritimes surrounded by pine trees and Mediterranean plants. The compound contains a church, residential spaces, and workshops where the nuns work, organized in the traditional layout of a Cistercian monastery.
The monastic community was founded in Mane in 1865, relocated to Reillanne in 1872, and settled in its current location by 1930. It received official abbey status in 1962.
The abbey shapes local life through the visible work of its nuns, who produce and share their handmade goods with the community. Daily prayers and religious ceremonies remain central to how the site functions and how visitors experience the space.
The abbey offers guided tours and operates a guesthouse for visitors who want to stay on site. The shop sells chocolates and artisanal products made by the nuns, available for purchase during visits.
The bell tower is visible from afar and serves as a landmark across the surrounding landscape. This distinctive feature makes the monastery easy to spot for travelers moving through the region.
