Duke Ansemond established the monastery in the 6th century at the confluence of the Rhône and Gère rivers, as documented in archives.
The monastery church transformed into a chapel for Burgundian kings in the late 9th century, marking a shift in its religious function.
The cloister underwent restoration work in 1938 by Jules Formigé, resulting in its current architectural configuration.
The church stands on an artificial Roman platform, with a vaulted passage remaining beneath its western sections.
