Saint-Cyran-en-Brenne Abbey

The Saint-Cyran-en-Brenne Abbey includes a 15th-century guest chamber and several auxiliary structures spread across the rural landscape of central France.

Founded in 632 by Sigirand on lands from King Dagobert I, the abbey functioned as a royal foundation and stored sacred relics of Saint Cyran and other saints.

The abbey gained prominence when Jean Duvergier de Hauranne served as abbot, introducing Jansenist religious principles that influenced French Catholic theology in the 17th century.

The current site houses the sisters of the Society of St. Pius X and features a new church dedicated to Saint Cyran, consecrated in October 2020.

In 1989, the abbey made headlines when police discovered Paul Touvier, wanted for crimes against humanity, hiding within its walls.
