Baou des Quatre Oures

Baou des Quatre Oures is a limestone summit near Toulon that rises to about 576 meters and forms part of the Monts Toulonnais range. The rocky structure offers over 500 different climbing routes, ranging from short beginner paths to more challenging sections.

The summit still bears traces of a 18th-century fortification that was destroyed during military campaigns in 1793. These ruins show the strategic importance of the height during times of conflict.

The name comes from the Provençal language and likely refers to the four winds that sweep across this exposed summit. Visitors can feel this natural wind effect when they reach the open peak.

Visitors should bring sturdy shoes and water, as the paths vary in difficulty depending on the season. The open peak offers good viewpoints but is windy with little shade.

Inhabited caves sit at the mountain base where people actually live, while a wooden cross marks the summit above. This connection between everyday life below and religious symbol above creates an unusual character.
