Causse Comtal, Protected limestone plateau in Aveyron, France
Causse Comtal is a limestone plateau in the Aveyron region that stretches between several towns and rises between about 1,080 and 2,265 feet (330 to 690 meters) in elevation. The flat to gently rolling terrain features open grasslands and exposed ground with sparse vegetation.
The plateau takes its name from the medieval counts of Rodez, who developed extensive grain farming across the land and made it a major grain supplier for the region. This agricultural focus shaped the landscape for hundreds of years.
The plateau hosts a variety of bird and butterfly species that thrive in its open grasslands and limestone terrain. Visitors often spot these creatures while walking across the wide, unshaded expanses where nature shapes the daily landscape.
The plateau is best explored on foot, and most paths are accessible directly from the road connecting Rodez to Espalion. Since shade is scarce, wear sturdy shoes and bring sun protection or rain gear depending on the season.
The area harbors rare plants including orchids and a groundsel species found nowhere else on Earth. This botanical distinction makes the plateau an important refuge for highly specialized plant life.
