Château d'Ancenis, Medieval castle in Ancenis, France
Description
Château d'Ancenis is a fortress on the Loire River featuring a Renaissance residence and a fortified entrance complex with defensive structures from different periods. The castle park surrounds these buildings and remains open to visitors daily, while the Renaissance structure regularly hosts temporary exhibitions.
History
The fortress was founded in 984 by Aremburga of Ancenis and experienced multiple sieges and transformations across the centuries. Following partial demolition ordered by Charles VIII in 1488, the site was rebuilt and reinforced several times in subsequent periods.
