Château d'Apcher is a medieval castle with a central courtyard surrounded by living quarters and service buildings. A protective wall once enclosed the entire complex and several structures remain partially visible today.
First documented in 1180, the castle served as the seat of one of eight regional barons with significant power. From the 17th century onward, it was gradually abandoned and fell into disrepair.
The name comes from the noble family who once ruled here and shaped medieval life in the region. Walking through, you can see how rooms were organized and understand how the lords and their household lived.
Information boards at different locations explain the various areas and architectural features. You can walk freely and spend time exploring the layout and understanding how the spaces were organized.
The keep tower remains remarkably intact while other sections crumbled over time. This uneven state of decay reveals how the site was gradually left behind across generations.
