Château de Chazeu, Medieval castle ruins in Laizy, France
Château de Chazeu is a castle ruin in Laizy with a pentagonal layout and remains of four round towers plus one square tower marking the entrance. The structure covers roughly half a hectare and reflects typical medieval fortification design.
Nicolas Rolin, Chancellor of the Duke of Burgundy, acquired the castle in the early 1400s and carried out major renovations. Roger de Rabutin later lived there during his exile from Louis XIV's court.
Roger de Rabutin transformed the castle into an exemplary French residence during his exile from Louis XIV's court, receiving notable guests including Marquise de Sévigné.
The ruin sits near the Arroux River in a rural setting. The site is accessible on foot, though the location has minimal facilities, so it is best to plan your visit ahead.
Trees now grow in the former moat, and the open courtyard has become a meadow. This gradual reclamation by nature reveals how time has slowly reshaped the structure.
