Château de Chevenon, Medieval fortress in Chevenon, France
Château de Chevenon is a four-story fortress with two large round towers on the sides and narrow openings for arrows and cannon fire. An interior courtyard links the various levels and forms the heart of the structure.
The structure was built between 1382 and 1406 under Guillaume de Chevenon, who served as captain at Vincennes under King Charles V. His family retained control of both the castle and the position for generations.
The ground floor rooms display fireplaces from the 14th century bearing coats of arms from noble families whose roots ran deep through the property's ownership.
The entrance on the west side leads through two square towers into an interior courtyard, from which you can access the various levels. Sturdy shoes help with the narrow and steep spiral stairs within the towers.
The original acoustic warning system in the guard's spiral staircase remains intact and shows how soldiers once communicated between different areas of the fortress. This sound-based method allowed quick messages to travel without anyone having to leave their post.
