Château de Colembert, Historical château in Colembert, France
Château de Colembert is a three-level mansion with two symmetrical wings and a triangular pediment entrance, built on an elevated platform enclosed by stone-edged moats. The structure combines classical French residential architecture with formal water features.
Architect Giraud Sannier built this residence between 1776 and 1784 for Count Charles Philippe de Sainte-Aldegonde on the site of an earlier fortress. The new construction replaced medieval structures with an Enlightenment-era dwelling.
The castle displays refined French noble architecture through its monumental staircase that crosses three diminishing arches above the moat and detailed window carvings. These architectural elements shape how the building appears to visitors today.
The building sits near the village church and town hall, visible from the departmental road in the Pas-de-Calais region. The central location makes it easy to reach from the village.
The largest château in the Boulonnais region features a belvedere tower built with military funding that offered views across the strait toward England. This rare combination of civilian and defensive purposes reflects the strategic position of this location.
