Chapel of the Grey Penitents

The Chapel of the Grey Penitents is a place of worship in Aigues-Mortes featuring a rectangular nave centered on a marble altar depicting scenes of the Passion of Christ. The altar is constructed from white Carrara marble and serves as the focal point of this protected monument.

The building was erected in the 14th century and underwent major reconstruction in 1607 following the Wars of Religion, receiving consecration in 1611. This restoration marked its revival as an enduring center of religious life in the city.

The chapel served as the seat of the Grey Penitents Brotherhood since the late 14th century, whose members dedicated themselves to caring for the sick and poor. The spaces still reflect this charitable tradition and its role in community life.

The building is open to visitors but is in a state requiring restoration work, with moisture problems affecting the altarpiece and floor structures. It is advisable to check beforehand about current conditions and any access limitations.

Two reliquaries were installed at the main altar in 1815 to replace originals destroyed during the French Revolution. These replacements show how the interior life of this space evolved across centuries.
