Château de Gallerande

Château de Gallerande is a medieval castle featuring a main building with an adjoining wing, four cylindrical towers, and two square towers set within wooded grounds. The entire complex sits nestled among trees in the Sarthe countryside.

An initial fortress rose during the 12th century and later passed to the Clermont-Gallerande family through marriage in 1210. The site underwent reconstruction and modification through the medieval period and beyond.

The building displays how medieval and Renaissance styles blended in the Sarthe region over time. Walking around, you notice how different periods left their mark on the towers and walls.

The property has been private since 1822 and opens only on special heritage days for guided tours. Visitors should check in advance to learn when access is available.

The Douet chapel on the grounds survived attacks during the Hundred Years War and was later rebuilt in the 17th century. Few visitors notice this small chapel tucked away within the castle complex.
