Château de Gonnord

Château de Gonnord, Medieval castle in Chemillé-en-Anjou, France

Château de Gonnord is a castle featuring a south-facing facade with square towers and a rectangular main structure. The inner courtyard contains arcades in the Italian Renaissance style, which frame the open central space and create covered walkways around the perimeter.

The original fortress dates to the 11th century but was destroyed during the Hundred Years War and rebuilt in the 15th century with a new rectangular design. This reconstruction transformed it from a purely defensive structure into a more comfortable residential building.

The families who owned the castle left their mark through architectural choices, particularly visible in the Renaissance details added during their time here. Walking through the courtyard, you can see how these additions reflect the tastes and wealth of the people who lived in the building.

This registered historical monument is located on Impasse Hyppolyte Fournier in Valanjou, within the municipality of Chemillé-en-Anjou. Access may be limited since it remains a private property, so checking opening hours beforehand is recommended for visitors planning a visit.

Interestingly, the building was partially used as a stone quarry during the 19th century, with locals extracting materials from its walls. The eastern section survived this extraction and still retains its original splendor from earlier centuries.
