Château de Grandval, Medieval castle in Teillet, France.
Château de Grandval is a stone castle perched on elevated ground at the edge of a valley, surrounded by waters from the Razisse dam and the winding Dadou River. The complex comprises residential quarters, defensive structures, and outbuildings spread across the site.
The castle was built in the 15th century for the Viscounts of Paulin and underwent major reconstruction in the 18th century under Jean Bernard's direction. These renovations shaped much of what visitors see today.
The building displays architectural features from different periods, reflecting how French noble residences evolved over time. Walking through its spaces reveals the layers of construction added across centuries.
The site lies about 4 kilometers south of Teillet village and becomes more visible when the dam's water level drops during drier periods. Visiting during late summer or early autumn offers better views of the structure.
German forces burned the structure in June 1944, leading to its abandonment. It was later partially submerged when the Razisse dam was constructed in 1954.
