Château de La Roche-sur-Foron

Château de La Roche-sur-Foron is a castle sitting on a steep rock above the Foron river, distinguished by its circular stone tower. The structure overlooks the valley and town below, providing commanding views across the landscape.

The circular tower was built between 1258 and 1268, replacing an older watchtower from the 11th century. This reconstruction followed architectural patterns introduced by Savoyard rulers of the period.

The castle reflects 13th-century Savoyard military design visible in its circular stone structure. This architectural style shaped fortifications across the Alpine region for generations.

The site is accessible on foot from central La Roche-sur-Foron near Place Saint-François, though the climb to the ruins is steep. Wear sturdy shoes and allow extra time to navigate the uneven paths around the stone structures.

The castle was destroyed in 1590 by Geneva troops during conflict between the Duke of Savoy and the Republic of Geneva. This violent end marks an important moment in the regional power struggles of that era.
