The castle stands on a large rock overlooking the Foron stream, featuring a circular keep measuring eleven meters in height.
The castle keep, built between 1258 and 1268, replaced an eleventh-century watchtower following architectural patterns introduced by Peter II of Savoy.
The castle displays thirteenth-century Savoyard military architecture with circular defensive innovations that eliminated blind spots in the fortification.
Visitors can access the site from Place Saint-François in central La Roche-sur-Foron by paying an entrance fee.
Geneva troops destroyed the castle in 1590 during the conflict between the Duke of Savoy and the Republic of Geneva.
