Chemin de croix et calvaire de Verdelais, Historical religious monument on Mont Cussol in Verdelais, France.
The Way of the Cross in Verdelais is a pilgrimage route with fourteen Neo-Gothic chapels that climb from the Sanctuary of Holy Agony to the hilltop. The ascent over several hundred meters combines religious stations with art monuments from the 1800s.
The route was created in the middle of the 1800s as a religious project and was consecrated in 1856 by high-ranking church officials. This event made the site an important pilgrimage destination for the region.
The stations along the path display sandstone artworks with painted reliefs showing different moments of Christ's Passion. These depictions help visitors follow the stories as they walk upward.
The walk starts at the sanctuary in the lower village and follows paved paths steeply uphill. The terrain is demanding on foot and requires good footwear and time for the climb.
At the summit stand three large metal crosses about 12 meters (40 feet) tall that are visible from far away. These crosses mark the end of the pilgrimage route and serve as a landmark for the surrounding region.
