Château de Saint-Martin de Toques

Château de Saint-Martin de Toques is a medieval castle built on a hilltop near Fontfroide monastery. The structure displays circular towers with crenellated walls and narrow arrow slits carved directly into the natural rock bedrock.

The fortress was built in 978 and served as a stronghold for the Viscounts of Narbonne. During the 16th century, Italian families from Milan acquired it and shaped its subsequent development.

The chapel inside dates from the 12th century and connects Christian spirituality with medieval defense needs. This blend of prayer and protection was common for fortified sites across the region.

The site remains privately owned and visits require advance arrangement. It sits on an elevated position, so wear sturdy footwear and allow time to explore the surrounding grounds.
