Château d'Aubais

Château d'Aubais is a castle built around a central square pavilion with a monumental staircase that rises through multiple levels beneath a domed ceiling. The construction reveals carefully proportioned spaces and refined architectural detailing throughout its interior.

The castle originated as a lordship under the Viscounty of Nîmes and underwent major reconstruction between 1680 and 1685 under the direction of Louis de Baschi du Cayla. This building period established its present form.

The staircase displays twelve decorative niches symbolizing the months of the year, blending classical architectural elements with regional French craftsmanship. Visitors can see how local artisans expressed their artistic vision throughout the interior design.

The castle remains private property but welcomes visitors during the European Heritage Days held each September. Plan your visit around this annual event if you wish to explore the interior.

The central staircase features a flat vault spanning a considerable distance, which drew admiration from military engineer Vauban during its construction. This engineering achievement was remarkable for its time and demonstrates the builders' technical skill.
