Château d'Aubais, Medieval castle in Aubais, France

The castle features a central square pavilion with a monumental staircase rising 25 meters high through 88 steps under a domed ceiling.

Originally a lordship of the Viscounty of Nîmes, the castle underwent major reconstruction between 1680 and 1685 under Louis de Baschi du Cayla's direction.

The staircase contains twelve decorative niches representing the months of the year, incorporating classical architectural elements with regional French design.

The castle remains a private property but opens its doors to visitors during the European Heritage Days in September each year.

The central staircase features a flat vault spanning 11 meters that garnered admiration from military engineer Vauban during its construction period.
