Château d'Avezan

Château d'Avezan is a castle in Lomagne Gersoise with thick stone walls, a high entrance door, defensive slits, and murder holes from the thirteenth century. The restored structure preserves these medieval defensive features while welcoming visitors to experience the architecture of that era.

The castle was built around 1230 for the Viscounts of Lomagne during a period of regional power struggles. It sided with English forces in conflicts against French royal authority, reflecting the complex alliances of medieval politics.

The castle now hosts contemporary art exhibitions, small concerts, and recitals that bring together local audiences. These cultural events transform the medieval structure into a living space for artistic exchange and community gathering.

Guided tours are available for visitors who want to explore the structure, and the restored medieval guardroom can host private dinners for small groups of up to twenty people. This dual use makes it accessible both for casual visits and organized events.

The castle owes its survival to thirty summers of restoration work involving students from Quebec and the United States who contributed their labor. This international effort transformed the structure from ruins into the restored fortress visitors see today.
