Château de Loriol, Historical monument in Ain department, France.
Château de Loriol is a castle with an L-shaped main building topped by a square keep with machicolations, flanked by round towers. The keep was erected in the mid-15th century and later enhanced with decorative facade treatments.
The castle took its current form in the mid-15th century under authorization from Duke Louis of Savoy. In the 18th century, significant modifications reshaped the keep's appearance and its decorative features.
The castle shows how the de Loriol family expressed their wealth and power through the building over generations. This is visible in the different construction phases that reflect various periods and tastes.
The site sits northwest of Confrançon center, accessible via departmental road 26 toward Mézériat. Visitors should note that while the exterior is visible, access to the grounds may be limited.
The keep retains original painted coatings on its facades dating to the 1740s that reproduce architectural details in rarely preserved fine work. These surface finishes offer a glimpse into decorative techniques from that era that seldom survive intact.
