Château du Prieuré

The Château du Prieuré is a castle in Conflans-Sainte-Honorine with classical architectural features including pilasters and a triangular pediment. Inside, the medieval kitchen and cellar from the 14th century remain intact, and historical gardens surround the property.

A Benedictine priory founded the site around 1080, and it developed into a religious center before becoming state property during the French Revolution. In the early 19th century, the building was converted into a residence and later expanded with underground passages.

The castle now houses a museum dedicated to river transportation and shows how important waterway traffic was to daily life in the region. The displays tell the stories of people who worked and lived along these river routes.

The castle sits in the center of Conflans-Sainte-Honorine and is easily accessible on foot, with historical gardens that invite walking. Visitors should allow time to see both the indoor exhibition and explore the outdoor grounds.

Hidden beneath the castle are secret passages that lead directly to the Seine River, dug during the 1870s when the building was redesigned. These concealed tunnels are a fascinating remnant of that construction phase and can be visited on certain guided tours.
