The castle stands on a hillside position overlooking the Vienne Valley, featuring a 15th-century dovecote containing 2,250 nesting boxes.
Built around 1440 by Jean Barillet, finance governor under Charles VII, the castle replaced an earlier square motte constructed on a former Gallic oppidum.
The property maintains wine production traditions dating to 1873 when Frédéric Becquet de Sonnay received a gold medal at the Tours Regional Agricultural Competition.
