Château des Brétignolles

Château des Brétignolles, Gothic castle in Anché, France.

Château des Brétignolles is a castle estate near Chinon featuring a medieval tower, Gothic chapel, and symmetrical auxiliary buildings arranged around the main grounds. The core structures were built between the 15th and 16th centuries, while the surrounding outbuildings were added in the 18th century.

The land was documented in the 9th century during the reign of Charles II the Bald and belonged to Marmoutier Abbey before the Bernard family transformed it into a castle between 1450 and 1480. This shift marked the transition from religious to private noble ownership.

The castle serves as a venue for community events such as dog shows and outdoor film screenings that bring local people together. Visitors can see how this historical place remains woven into the daily life of the region.

The grounds are straightforward to explore, with buildings arranged clearly around a central courtyard and accessible on foot. The surrounding area provides ample space to walk through and discover the different sections without feeling rushed.

The grounds contain troglodyte caves carved into the hillside that may have served early inhabitants as storage or shelter spaces. An additional curiosity is a Bollée wind engine installed between 1894 and 1902 that once pumped water for the property.
