Château de Terraube

Château de Terraube is a stone castle featuring a grand staircase that leads to an entrance decorated with carved ornaments, animal figures, gargoyles, and family coats of arms. The structure spans multiple levels and displays architectural layers from different periods blended into a single complex.

The castle was built in 1272 by the de Galard family, whose lineage traced back to Merovingian dukes of Gascony. Between the 16th and 18th centuries, the property underwent major renovations that fundamentally changed its appearance and purpose.

The building combines medieval fortifications with later residential sections arranged around two garden courtyards facing inward. This layout shows how the castle transformed from a fortress into a family residence that adapted to the needs of its inhabitants over time.

The property remains in private ownership by the de Galard family and cannot be visited without prior arrangement. Visits are possible during cultural events or by advance booking, so check ahead before planning a trip.

A date inscription carved into the doorframe confirms the exact construction year of 1272. The 18th-century wrought iron staircase is a protected architectural element that displays the metalwork craftsmanship of its era in detailed ironwork.
