Château de Tholet

The Château de Tholet is a medieval castle in Gabriac with a Renaissance square tower and an 18th-century residence positioned within its boundaries. Defensive walls encircle the property, and a water-filled moat borders the western side.

The castle was founded in the 11th century and documented since 1075 as a seat of the Solages family. This family held significant influence during the Hundred Years War and shaped the estate's long history.

Inside, the main hall displays architectural elements from different eras, with its old fireplace and paired windows showing how building styles evolved over time.

Guided tours are offered during the summer months and lead through the medieval buildings and historic rooms. Visitors should prepare for uneven surfaces and steps typical of older fortified structures.

In 1794, a local farmer who lived on the property refused to carry out orders to demolish the towers and walls. His defiance saved the castle from destruction and allowed it to survive to the present day.
