Château d'Oricourt, Medieval castle in Oricourt, France
Château d'Oricourt is a castle with double surrounding walls and two square towers overlooking a residential courtyard and farm buildings. The complex includes a kitchen, cellars, bakery, water tank, and a round pigeon house among other structures.
The castle was built in the 12th century and served as the seat of Gaucher d'Oricourt, who held the position of constable to the Count of Burgundy around 1170. It stands as evidence of early medieval military architecture in the region.
The name comes from the Oricourt family who made this place their home for generations. Visitors can still see the rooms where family life unfolded, from cooking areas to private quarters, revealing how medieval nobles actually lived.
The site has been fully preserved since 1984 and is open to visitors. Guided tours are available to help you explore the medieval military structures and the different functional areas of the property.
A 10-meter (33-foot) deep ditch on the southern side separates the fortress from the limestone plateau, creating a natural defensive barrier. This shows how builders cleverly used the landscape to protect the stronghold.
