Château de Prades, Medieval castle in Sainte-Enimie, France
Château de Prades is a castle situated on a rocky outcrop near Sainte-Enimie with a residential building to the south and a chapel to the north. The entire complex is enclosed by defensive walls and displays typical medieval construction methods.
The castle was built in the 12th century as a residence for the prior of Sainte-Enimie and came under the control of Sainte-Enimie Abbey in 1283. It later served primarily defensive purposes during times of political upheaval.
The structure displays medieval features such as vaulted rooms and a spiral staircase that reflect the architectural traditions of the Lozère region. The chapel to the north and the massive corner tower are defining elements of this site.
The castle is privately owned today and was registered as a historical monument in 1971, so visiting requires prior arrangement with the owners. It is best to contact ahead to arrange access to the grounds.
During the Wars of Religion, the castle successfully repelled attacks by Protestant captain Merle and prevented the westward expansion of opposing forces. This military achievement made the site a strategically important location in the region.
