Commanderie d'Avalleur

Commanderie d'Avalleur is a medieval commandery on a plateau overlooking Bar-sur-Seine featuring a rectangular chapel with Gothic interior and Romanesque exterior elements. The building preserves structures from different construction periods and shows the typical layout of a Templar establishment.

The Templars received the land before 1142 and founded the commandery around 1167, maintaining it until their dissolution in 1312. The order's end transferred the site to the Hospitallers, who took over its management.

The chapel displays features of Templar architecture with painted decorations and wooden framework reflecting regional building styles from eastern France. You can observe the craftsmanship details that were characteristic of religious commanderies from this period.

The site is located at Hameau d'Avalleur and is accessible from May through October on Tuesdays to Sundays. Visitors should expect a rural location outside town and wear sturdy footwear.

The walls of this site retain their original 12th-century construction with few later modifications. This makes it one of the few remaining intact Templar buildings of this type in France.
