Castle, La Couvertoirade

The castle of La Couvertoirade is a medieval commandry with thick stone walls, a central tower, and defensive structures built on elevated terrain in the Aveyron department. The site was positioned strategically to protect and control the surrounding region.

The fortress was established in the 12th century by the Knights Templar and served as a crucial stronghold of their power in the region. After the Templar order was dissolved, the Knights Hospitaller took over and continued its operations.

The castle displays medieval military architecture with thick stone walls and towers that reflect the authority of knightly orders in the region. Walking through the fortified settlement, visitors can see how these structures shaped daily life and defensive practices.

The castle is best explored during daylight hours, and visitors should wear sturdy shoes since the pathways and stairs can be uneven. Parking is available outside the village walls, from where you walk to reach the entrance.

The castle still has its original medieval water system with underground cisterns that were vital during times of siege. This hidden infrastructure shows the care taken to ensure residents could withstand prolonged attacks.
