Château de Ballon

Château de Ballon is a medieval castle situated on elevated ground featuring round towers and stone walls with windows that replaced original arrow slits during later modifications. The preserved fortification elements and defensive structures demonstrate the construction methods typical of strongholds from this era.

Guillaume de Belleme constructed the original fortress in 1005 and established it as a strategic stronghold known as the Gate of Maine. Its location made this structure an important control point for the region throughout subsequent centuries.

The gardens at this castle received recognition as Jardins Remarquables for their medieval and Renaissance design patterns that remain visible today. Visitors can explore these landscaped areas and see how the grounds reflect the tastes and traditions of earlier centuries.
