Donjon de Ballon, Medieval keep in Ballon-Saint Mars, France
Donjon de Ballon is a stone keep built on a rocky hilltop with thick defensive walls and window openings from different periods. The interior holds furniture from multiple eras and is surrounded by gardens with beds of medicinal plants, herbs for cooking, and geometrically arranged sections.
The keep originated in the 11th century as a military outpost and changed hands repeatedly between English Normans and French forces. Followers of Jeanne d'Arc eventually helped secure it for France.
The fortress takes its name from the Ballon family who shaped it over centuries. The rooms reflect different periods when people lived and worked within its walls.
The grounds are freely walkable with paths through gardens and buildings that span multiple levels. Sturdy footwear is recommended as the ground is uneven and stairs lead to different elevations.
Numidian cranes live in the gardens, having found refuge from their African origins at this location. From the beech-tree lane, a wide view opens across the Saosnois countryside.
