Château de Beaumont-sur-Oise

The Château de Beaumont-sur-Oise is a medieval castle centered around a rectangular Romanesque keep that rises approximately 25 meters high with sturdy buttresses supporting its walls. This keep forms the main part of a larger fortified complex, with ruins of surrounding defensive structures still visible today.

Count Mathieu built this stone castle between 1090 and 1151, replacing an earlier wooden fortress that had stood since ancient times. Later, the structure suffered major damage from French artillery during English occupation in the early 15th century.

The castle served as the power center of the region for centuries and shaped the identity of the surrounding area. Local people gathered here for protection and commerce during its active years.

The castle ruins are accessible year-round, and you can observe the restoration work that has been ongoing since the late 20th century. Plan time to walk around the entire site to fully appreciate the different sections and structures.

Beneath the castle grounds lie the remains of an early medieval monastery that predated the stone fortification. These archaeological discoveries reveal that the site had religious origins before it became a military stronghold.
